The short version

The P813 is for the angler who likes a casting reel but refuses to bully small baits with too much rod. It is short, light in the hand, and easy to work around docks, grass edges, tight shoreline targets, or the side of a boat. Put a small crankbait, jerkbait, popper, or compact cork rig on it and the rod loads cleanly instead of making you force the cast.

This is not a downsized flipping stick. It is a light-reaction casting rod built around 6–12 lb line, small hooks, and a working drag. The Medium-Light power lets a fish get into the rod. The Moderate-Fast action keeps trebles pinned and gives compact baits some help on the cast without feeling loose when you twitch, pop, or steer one through a target. If you want casting-reel control on tackle that normally gets overpowered, this is why the P813 exists.

Why this rod behaves the way it does

The P813 uses a controlled Moderate-Fast load so light casting presentations can load the rod without being overpowered. At 6'8" and Medium-Light power, it is short enough for accurate target work while still giving small treble hooks, light single hooks, and compact cork rigs room to stay connected under pressure. The lower section carries enough authority for open water and light cover, but the rod is intentionally built around a 6–12 lb system and a 1/8–1/2 oz complete payload rather than forced extraction.

Complete payload means the whole thing you cast—lure or sinker, hook, bait or trailer, cork, swivel, split rings, and any other hardware. A 1/2 oz sinker with a hook and bait is already over a 1/2 oz ceiling.

Primary

Casting drop shot

The P813 is a purpose-fit casting option for drop-shot work when you want baitcasting line control with a light, exposed-hook system. Keep the complete rig inside 1/8–1/2 oz, use 6–12 lb line appropriate to the cover, and fish it with a reel-set or controlled sweep rather than a hard power hookset. This is not a heavy-cover drop-shot setup; open water through sparse cover is the center of the job.

Compact popping-cork and Gulf Coast inshore rigs

Keep the cork, weight, swivel, leader, hook, bait, and any other cast hardware inside the 1/2 oz complete-payload ceiling. The compact 6'8" format is useful around shorelines, drains, grass edges, open flats, and boat-side targets where accuracy matters. Oysters, pilings, hard current, dense grass, or any situation that requires immediate forced extraction is outside this rod's best lane.

Secondary / Crossover

  • Small shallow crankbaits: the Moderate-Fast load lets a compact squarebill or shallow crank work without a stiff rod constantly trying to pull small trebles loose. Keep sustained resistance and complete payload inside the rod's envelope.
  • Compact jerkbaits, twitchbaits, and minnow plugs: the 6'8" length is easy to work downward or to the side. Snap on controlled slack, let the bait glide, and use the reel to recover slack rather than to dictate cadence.
  • Small poppers and walking baits: use a controlled sweep after the fish loads the rod; do not swing at the splash.
  • Small lipless crankbaits: steady retrieves and controlled yo-yo work are fine; aggressive ripping through a grass bed is not.
  • Light-wire Ned rigs and micro jigs: keep the point exposed or lightly skin-hooked and the complete rig inside the rating.
  • Spybaits and finesse plugs: valid when the bait, hook, resistance, and usable spool capacity stay appropriate to the light system.
  • Light inshore hard baits: open-flat use is valid when current, fish size, abrasion, and spool reserve remain reasonable.

Not Recommended

  • Anything below 1/8 oz or above 1/2 oz complete payload.
  • Heavy Texas rigs, heavy jigs, thick weed guards, or big hooks buried in a lot of plastic.
  • Punching, flipping, mat frogs, or any forced-extraction job.
  • Deep, hard-pulling crankbaits or repeated hard ripping through grass.
  • A locked drag, oversized line, or the idea that light tackle should win by brute force.
  • Long-running fish or hard current when the reel does not have enough usable line.

Fish it like it was built to be fished

Let the rod bend before you lean on the fish. With trebles, keep winding and sweep. With a light single hook, reel out the slack and make a controlled set. Set the drag for the leader and hook, keep the rod out of a high-stick angle, and use side pressure instead of trying to win everything in the first second. The P813 feels best when the whole system stays light and balanced; overpower it and you erase the reason to own it.

Line and leader

  • Monofilament/copolymer: 8–12 lb. The easy choice for poppers, walkers, and compact cork rigs because it floats and adds useful stretch.
  • Fluorocarbon: 6–10 lb for exposed-hook finesse; 8–12 lb for reaction and abrasion needs. Good for drop shots, small cranks, jerkbaits, and lipless baits. Watch memory and capacity as diameter rises.
  • Straight braid: 8–15 lb, technique-specific. Useful for surface work or sparse vegetation, but the low stretch demands a softer drag and a smooth sweep.
  • Braid to leader: 8–15 lb braid with a 6–12 lb leader. A flexible casting-finesse and light-inshore setup when spool efficiency and a replaceable leader matter. Verify the knot passes cleanly through the finished guides.

Those are setup ranges, not new rod ratings. Working drag is set by the weakest leader, knot, and hook in the system.

Reel class

Use a shallow, low-inertia BFS casting reel for the lower half of the payload range. A light 50/70-class casting reel can cover the upper half when the spool starts cleanly enough. Roughly 25–30 IPT is easy to manage across small cranks and surface baits; 30-plus IPT helps recover twitchbait or drop-shot slack but has to be slowed down on resistance baits.
