Reel size is a family label, not a universal measurement. On a spinning reel, size affects spool diameter, capacity, line coils, pickup, weight, drag package, and how the rod balances. On a casting reel, frame and spool size affect capacity, startup inertia, braking, and how the reel fits your hand.

Start with useful capacity after the longest cast, then check spool behavior and balance with the real line and payload. Bigger is not automatically stronger or better. Extra weight and unused line can make a finesse setup feel dead, while a reel that is too small can run out of reserve when the fish runs.
