Summer is one of the clearest examples of why a drop shot should not be treated as a northern-only or deep-water-only technique. Warm-water bass may be offshore, suspended, on deep structure, under docks or buried in shallow shade. The drop shot can be adjusted for all of those positions.

What the rig does

The weight contacts bottom while the hook and soft plastic remain above it. That separation lets the angler control bait height independently of sinker contact.

Open-water rigs commonly use a nose-hooked finesse plastic. Around snaggy cover, a weedless presentation can make more sense.

Deep summer fish

Points, ledges, brush piles, rock and offshore structure can hold bass through summer. A drop shot allows precise depth control without forcing the bait to lie on bottom.

Weight is selected to maintain contact at the actual depth and wind/current—not simply because summer means “heavy.” Too little weight loses control; too much can make the presentation unnecessarily abrupt.

Suspended summer fish

Electronics may show fish above structure or following bait. In that case, dropping below them defeats the purpose. The angler can count the rig down, use forward-facing/vertical electronics where available, and keep the bait at the fish’s level.

Rod, line and reel

A medium-light to medium spinning rod with a responsive tip and useful lower-blank reserve is the normal center. Braid-to-fluorocarbon provides low-stretch main line with a less visible leader; straight fluorocarbon remains viable.

The reel needs smooth drag more than brute-force gearing.

TCR Core fit

SJ842 is the standard Core spinning finesse/drop-shot lane within its 1/8–1/2 oz complete-payload range. SJ843 is the stronger option when cover, hook or line demands rise. P813 is the direct Core casting drop-shot lane where precise casting around cover is the goal.

Do not overload any of them by counting only the sinker. Weight, hook, plastic and terminal hardware are all payload.

Summer drop-shot fishing works because the rig can be made to match fish position. Find the depth first; then build the presentation around it.
