Summer bass can be caught shallow, deep and everywhere between. The useful way to organize summer tackle is not by one seasonal lure but by three recurring jobs: topwater/moving fish, heavy cover, and finesse/depth control.

Topwater and moving presentations

Low light, schooling activity, shade lines and active forage can create topwater opportunities even in hot weather. Walking baits, poppers, buzzbaits and other moving presentations require different hook-management behavior.

Heavy cover

Vegetation, shade, docks, log jams and thick shallow cover can remain productive all summer. Mud Hole’s summer source specifically uses the FP936 family as its heavy-cover example: 7'9", 15–30 lb, 3/4–2 oz, Moderate-Fast, Extra Heavy.

Offshore and finesse

Heat is not the decision rule

Surface temperature alone does not tell you where every bass went. Oxygen, current, shade, forage, thermocline position, vegetation health and fishing pressure can all matter.

Use electronics and visible habitat to establish where fish are positioned. Then select the technique.

Summer requires range. A useful system lets the angler move from a topwater bite to heavy cover to offshore finesse without pretending one rod should do all three jobs.
