A slow-fall Neko rig changes the normal Neko objective. Instead of getting the bait to bottom and maintaining contact, the presentation is built to spend more time falling through suspended fish.

Reduce the fall rate

The basic rig still uses a stick-style soft plastic, a finesse hook near the middle of the bait and a nail weight in the nose. The difference is weight.

Mud Hole’s source identifies roughly 1/32–1/16 oz nail weights as the foundation of this suspended version. Less weight slows the descent and keeps the bait in the strike zone longer.

Where it works

Standing timber, bait schools, bluff walls, bridge pilings, marina docks and deep points can all hold fish off bottom. Clear-water spotted bass and smallmouth fisheries are particularly natural fits, but largemouth can use the same suspended positions.

Electronics matter because the presentation is depth-specific.

Let the fall work

Cast or place the bait above the fish and allow it to descend on controlled slack. Watch the line. A twitch, hesitation, jump or premature stop can indicate a bite.

If the bait reaches the target depth without a strike, a short lift followed by controlled slack repeats the productive falling phase.

Constant shaking defeats the point.

Tackle

Mud Hole centers the technique on a 6'10"–7'2" Medium-Light to Medium spinning rod with Fast to Extra-Fast action, 2500–3000 reel, roughly 10–12 lb braid and 8–10 lb fluorocarbon leader.

Within TCR Core, SJ842 is the closest standard lane: 7'0" Medium Fast, 6–12 lb, 1/8–1/2 oz. Because the nail weight is only part of the complete payload, bait, hook and hardware still count.

Where an angler specifically wants a softer ML/fast-to-extra-fast suspended-finesse system, that remains a custom-build opportunity rather than forcing a Core label onto it.

The slow-fall Neko works by maximizing time at fish depth. The fall is the presentation.
